Dianne Dowling and her family have a certified organic farm on Howe Island (between Kingston and Gananoque, Ontario), raising dairy and beef cattle. She is involved in local food and farm activities in the Kingston area, including being a KASSI board member, president of Local 316 of the National Farmers Union and a member of the Food Policy Council for Kingston, Frontenac and Lennox-Addington.
Based in North Vancouver, B.C., freelance writer Elizabeth James has an undying curiosity in the world around her. She rarely passes up an opportunity to execute her mentor’s mantra, “There are stories everywhere,Liz; your only job is to write them.”
Emily Board is one of the farmers who run la ferme coopérative Tourne-Sol in les Cèdres, Quebec (45 minutes west of Montreal). The farm is a workers’ cooperative made up of five farmers and one apprentice working twelve acres of land rented from organic grain farmers. Gavin Dandy is a co-founder of the Everdale Environmental Learning Centre (www.everdale.org) and a former COG board member. He works full time as an organic farmer and a teacher of new farmers. He lives at Everdale with his wife Karen and their three daughters.
Greg Wingate is the organic operator behind Mapple Farm (website: mapplefarm.com). Besides sweet potatoes, he raises Jerusalem and Chinese artichokes, horseradish and more “uncommon but useful” seed and plant stock for vegetable growers.
